Responding to IRS Notices with Confidence

2 AFSP, EA, CFP®, CPA, CRTP

Track:

Early career

The first call when a client receives an IRS notice is to their tax preparer, and this webinar provides a first response guide to protect appeal rights, handle notices and resolve issues quickly and efficiently. We’ll identify common IRS letters and notices, and translate common CP/LTR codes, like “CP2000,” into plain English. We’ll map what stage of the tax administration lifecycle the taxpayer is actually in (assessment vs. collection) and show how to use transcripts and documentation to decide whether to concede, contest or escalate.

Objectives

Upon completion of this session, you will be able to:

● Assess the validity of client’s IRS notice quickly by identifying notice types

● Protect the client’s rights from day one, noting dates and preserving appeal options

● Build a first-response file fast with powers of attorney and IRS transcripts

● Select the right resolution path—differentiate strategies for underreporting (CP2000), math-error or balance-due

(CP14) and intent to levy collection notices (CP504 or LT11)

● Communicate effectively while you set client expectations and pricing
