Identifying Tax Planning Ideas in Form 1040

Great planners start with a disciplined read of Form 1040, U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, rather than complex strategies. In this session, preparers get a straightforward, repeatable method to scan a client’s prior-year return and spot high-value planning ideas. We’ll pinpoint ideas on Form 1040 and key schedules to maximize filing-status advantages, credit optimization, retirement and health-savings opportunities, capital-gain bracket arrangement, charitable giving choices and simple timing moves that lower a client’s tax. You’ll leave knowing the highlights of Form 1040 planning with simple, trustworthy ideas. We’ll also flag items likely to shift after 2025, so you know what to re-check each year.

Objectives

Upon completion of this session, you will be able to:

● Scan Form 1040 to verify basic information and identify immediate credit opportunities

● Spot eligibility and contribution room for health savings accounts (HSAs) and retirement plans like

traditional IRAs or Roth IRAs, including back door Roth basics

● Consider harvesting losses or gains and use the 0% and preferential brackets

● Confirm savings for small-business and rental clients with home office, vehicle expensing and

depreciation options

● Prioritize, document and limit risk with a comparison matrix to implement ideas that make the most

sense
